I give it an emphatic 10.
Think about the possibilities. We could end up with Josh Smith vs LeBron James. I am still not convinced that LeBron will enter and am even more convinced that if he does enter that there is absolutely no way that whoever is judging would let him lose (see 1988 Dunk Contest in Chicago). But lets think about the big picture. The problem with the Dunk Contest now is that the marquee names for whatever reason don’t participate. Look back at 1988 when you had arguably the two biggest names in dunkers Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins in the finals of the Slam Dunk contest. We all know who won that contest (and some of us know who really should have won it) and it has been replayed countless times since. It did as much for the league and those two players image as it did for the Dunk contest itself. 1988 was like a heavyweight fight. In one corner you had from the Chicago Bulls, wearing Nike, Michael Jordan. In the other, from the Atlanta Hawks, wearing Reebok, Dominique Wilkins. Just like a heavyweight fight they went toe to toe dunk for dunk until Jordan’s famed free throw line dunk won the thing. (not to mention some hometown judging on Nique’s final dunk)
So who would win between Josh Smith and LeBron James? I am not even getting into that for reasons I sited earlier, but I would love to see it. Josh has been there and done that. LeBron is a freak of nature and could have the same dominating effect that Vince Carter had on the competition. If Lebron does indeed get in then the event will be hyped like it hasn’t been in years. For it to be truly successful however, he must have a capable challenger. That my friends should be Josh Smith.
