A New York Times article is suggesting that the Atlanta Hawks along with the Atlanta Thrashers may have been actually put up for sale by the Atlanta Spirit group. Jeff Schultz of the AJC picked up on it and has his own article up on AJC.com.
Quoting the New York Times Article:
Now that the economy seems to be on the mend, owners who held off selling during the downturn are seeking to unload their teams. According to sports bankers, the teams thought to be for sale include the Atlanta Hawks, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Golden State Warriors and the Detroit Pistons in the N.B.A; the Stars, the Atlanta Thrashers and potentially the Columbus Blue Jackets in the N.H.L.; and baseball’s Houston Astros
Now I will point out that there is not a quote in the Times Article of from the AJC that was made by anyone in the Atlanta Spirit group. It has long been speculated that if estranged partner Steve Belkin were to leave the group that the Spirit would seek an additional partner. There is no evidence here that any of this information is true but I wouldn’t be completely shocked if both franchises were for sale. As with all of the ownership news lately it has very little to do with game on the floor. It is just something to keep an eye on heading into the off season.
