Hawks Coaching Search Continues
Ok maybe I got a little excited and forgot what I was dealing with here in regards to a coaching search. The Hawks are going about this slow and there really is nothing wrong with that. You basically have nothing terribly pressing at the moment going on except preparations for the NBA Draft in which the Hawks have a late first round pick. What we know so far is that Avery Johnson has been interviewed twice for the job. He seems interested and Michael Cunningham said in a recent blog post that Johnson’s desire for personnel power has been overstated. [...]
Avery Johnson News and Thoughts
While the Hawks are supposed to have sat down and interviewed Dwane Casey sometime this weekend for their vacant head coaching position, it was Avery Johnson that received his second interview with the team on Friday. That news comes amongst the news that the favorite to land Johnson, The New Orleans Hornets had moved on in their search and were now focusing on Boston assistant Tom Thibodeau and Portland assistant Monty Williams. Reports are that Johnson wants to coach in New Orleans only if the club is able to complete its sale from George Shinn to Gary Chouest. Also it [...]
Avery Johnson Rumors Heating Up?
Perhaps not completely except for the fact that some of his other options are drying up. Michael Cunningham of the AJC is reporting that representatives for Johnson had continued to talk with the Hawks ever since Johnson had a face to face meeting with the team. Teams that Johnson was rumored to be in the running for have started to look at other options. The Philadelphia 76ers today hired current broadcaster Doug Collins as their new head coach. Also the New Orleans Hornets appear to be focusing on other candidates after Johnson allegedly wanted some front office control with the [...]
Atlanta Hawks Coaching Chatter
Per Michael Cunningham of the AJC.com While the Hawks have sat down and talked with Avery Johnson about their vacant head coaching position there is another name to add to the list. Portland assistant Dean Demopoulos is expected to have a phone interview with Hawks GM Rick Sund. Demopoulos was an assistant in Seattle when Sund was there and is the current lead assistant for the Portland Trailblazers. The Hawks are set to meet with Dwane Casey later this week. I still feel like Casey is ultimately going to be the favorite although if money is not a factor then [...]
Wizards Win NBA Draft Lottery
The Washington Wizards hit the jack pot and perhaps won the John Wall sweepstakes. The New Jersey Nets whom had the worst record in the league this season will pick 3rd. NBA Draft Lottery Results 1. Washingon Wizards 2. Philadelphia 76ers 3. New Jersey Nets 4. Minnesota Timberwolves 5. Sacramento Kings 6. Golden State Warriors 7. Detroit Pistons 8. Los Angeles Clippers 9. Utah Jazz 10. Indiana Pacers 11. New Orleans Hornets 12. Memphis Grizzlies 13. Toronto Raptors 14. Houston Rockets The Atlanta Hawks will have the 24th pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.
(Source: Yardbarker.com) The Hawks will in fact be sitting down to interview Dallas Maverick assistant Dwane Casey but the first interview will go to current ESPN Analyst and former Mavericks coach Avery Johnson. Johnson is probably the highest profile candidate available and I assumed here that he would probably be too expensive for the Hawks. Still if you like to dream he would be my choice to replace Mike Woodson. Johnson has interviewed with Philadelphia and New Orleans and is expected to be interviewed by the Nets at some point. Fact is though his last salary was nearly double what [...]
Hawks to Meet With Mavericks Assistant Dwane Casey
Mark Bradley is reporting that the Hawks have asked for and received permission to talk with Mavericks assistant Dwane Casey. While we have been throwing out a lot of candidates for the job it might turn into a one horse race after all. Casey worked under Hawks GM Rick Sund for five seasons as an assistant to Nate McMillian in Seattle. So both sides are familiar with each other. Casey is in demand however as it is also being reported that he is the leading candidate for the New Orleans Hornets job. Casey interviewed for the Hawks job in 2004 [...]

Hawks Coaching Candidates
(Source: Yardbarker.com) Peachtree Hoops has a full list of likely people to be considered for the Hawks vacant Head Coaching Position. While I am not going to recite their entire list I want to highlight a few of the candidates that I would like or think will get serious consideration. Sam Mitchell – The former Toronto Raptors coach has been unemployed since being let go by the Raptors in 2008. He lives in Atlanta and is a logical choice to be considered. He is also a former coach that might not command a large salary. However, I am going to [...]
Reaction to the Dismissal of Mike Woodson
The Mike Woodson era came to an end yesterday as the Hawks informed him in a morning meeting that they would not be extending him a contract offer. Woodson ends his Hawks tenure with a 206-286 coaching record. He oversaw a franchise that was at rock bottom when he took it over and it grew into a 53 win team. Mike Woodson clearly leaves the franchise in a lot better shape than he found it. Clearly though given the Hawks playoff performances it was indeed time for a change. The Hawks face many questions during this off season and this [...]
