Michael Cunningham is reporting that the Hawks will indeed offer Johnson a max deal when the clock strikes midnight tonight. There is a lot of misinformation out there from a lot of publications, but I have a feeling that Michael is not one that will spread misinformation. He is a very good writer who isn’t going to write about assumptions or supposition. If he’s reporting this, then my guess is, he has heard something from inside that this will indeed happen.
Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that Joe wants to stay in Atlanta. I would too if I could get $27 million more than I could anywhere else.
There is no need for me to continue going on and on about how much of a mistake I think this will be. For the record, I think Joe is a very good player who would be a great second or third guy on a team with a true alpha dog. I just don’t think Joe is the alpha dog, and therefore, I think a max contract would be grossly overpaying him. If this deal is done, then the Hawks have to have a secondary deal ready to go. The secondary deal has to be one that is made for a player that pushes this team over the top. The lack of cap flexibilty this team will have after this deal means that they MUST make a splash if Joe resigns and make a deal to get Chris Paul or someone of that caliber. Would New Orleans take Josh Smith, a young and budding star in the league, and Jamal Crawford’s expiring contract for Chris Paul and Emeka Okafor’s terrible contract?
