Steve Rosenberry Leaves Hawks For Blazers

The Associated Press is reporting that Atlanta Hawks assistant general manager Steve Rosenberry has been hired by the Portland Trailblazers to be an assistant general manager to new general manager Richard Cho.  This is the first domino to fall from Rick Sund’s scouting staff.  Assistant GM Dave Pendergraft is also being courted by both Denver and Phoenix for their GM positions.  It is always a good sign when people in your scouting staff are being looked at by other organizations.

Steve Rosenberry had been with Rick Sund for a while.  He spent 13 years in Seattle under Wally Walker and later Rick Sund prior to coming to Atlanta with Sund.  Richard Cho was also a member of the Sonics front office at that time.  Cho has the reputation of being a strong statistically oriented guy, so this makes me wonder if Steve Rosenberry has dabbled some in using advanced stats as a tool to help with traditional scouting methods.

If Dave Pendergraft ends up leaving, Rick Sund will have to fill two positions on his scouting staff.  One in house candidate that could be up for a promotion is Mike McNieve.  He has been the Hawks Director of Basketball Operations for the last three years under Sund.  He has experience in the NBA as an assistant coach, and he has been a scout in the past as well.  Other than that, I really don’t know much about him.

McNieve is not a limelight gatherer but he is a but very perceptive and capable guy based on my recall from Milwaukee.
