Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that there have been chatters about trading Josh Smith, and that both parties (Smith & the Atlanta Hawks organization) have entertained the idea of it:
The Atlanta Hawks have started to gauge trade interest on forward Josh Smith, and Smith isn’t adverse to ending his seven-year stay with his hometown team, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Monday.
Smith hasn’t requested a trade, but has privately told league friends that the Boston Celtics, New Jersey Nets,Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic are his preferred destinations should the Hawks decide to move him.
Nothing new here folks, we’ve all heard it before, right? “Smith wants to leave Atlanta.” “Atlanta puts Smith on the trading block.” It’s a topic that has been commonplace recently. It’s kind of like the rumors about Smith not getting along with former coach Mike Woodson, it’s always mentioned but nothing ever happens. The topic gets kinda old right?… Right, but if we take anything from all the talk that we heard about Smith & Woodson, it is that it did have legs. So, this too has a possibility of having legs and being true as well.
Adrian Wojnarowski suggested that Josh Smith would prefer to go to any of the 4, the Boston Celtics, New Jersey Nets, Houston Rockets, and Orlando Magic. Why those 4? Your guess is as good as mine.
If I were to guess why he would want to play for the Boston Celtics, I would say it’s because he would be able to play alongside former high school teammate, Rajon Rondo.
If I were to guess why he would want to play for the New Jersey Nets, I would say it’s because of the chance to play…beside a high caliber point guard, in front of a billionaire, in front of rap/hip hop star, and a future big market city.
If I were to guess why he would want to play for the Houston Rockets, I would say it’s because he wants to redeem himself in front of the city where he made one of the most questionable decisions in dunk contest history….Horrible guess, I know. Can you come up with a better one?
If I were to guess why he would want to play for the Orlando Magic, I would say it’s because he gets to play with his childhood friend, Dwight Howard.
All guessing and joking aside, I wouldn’t bet on Smith getting traded to any of the four. Wojnarowski is right, these teams don’t have the right assets to make a deal. Asides from Dwight himself, Orlando doesn’t have much to offer. Asides from Brook Lopez, New Jersey doesn’t have much to offer. Asides from Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce or Rajon Rondo, Boston doesn’t have much to offer. All of the players that the Hawks would probably want from the teams are either untouchable or close to untouchable.
The only team that might threaten to acquire Smith is Houston. I think both sides would talk if Houston is open to a a deal with Luis Scola + future draft pick + Courtney Lee or Luis Scola + Jordan Hill. But then again, I’m not entirely sure if either team would even agree to a deal like that.
Honestly, trading Smith wouldn’t be the end of the world for me nor should it be for any Hawks fan. This team needs some shaking, they can’t stay in tact and expect to compete for a championship. Changes need to be made in the roster and in the core. With Smith being the best trade asset the Hawks have, he may be the best chance the Hawks have to improving this roster through trades.
Also, be prepared. I’m willing to bet that we see Josh Smith’s name circling around the trade rumors all summer long. I think this is finally the time one of Smith or Horford needs to go, and since the media has portrayed Horford as some sort of untouchable player (even though he shouldn’t be), Josh Smith’s name will be the one on the papers every morning.
