Despite a slow start, Team USA obliterated Tunisia on Tuesday, 110-63, in the second game of the 2012 London Olympics.
Reserves Kevin Love and Carmelo Anthony led the team in scoring with 16 points apiece. Kevin Durant finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while non NBA-er Anthony Davis was 5-of-5 from the field (all alley-oops) and also hit two foul-shots for a total of 12 points, Russell Westbrook added 11 points and OKC Thunder teammate James Harden chipped in with 10 points. Point guard Chris Paul dished out a game-high seven assists. The starters only scored 30 of the team USA’s 110 points.
Tunisian forward Makram Ben Romdhane poured in a game-high 22 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds in the contest. Teammate Mohamed Hadidane (11) was the only other Tunisian in double-figures.
The Americans actually trailed the Olympic newcomers early in the game 8-4. Tunisia controlled the lead until about the two and a half minute mark, before the second unit took over for Team USA and scored the final nine points of the period to put them up 21-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Anthony drained the Americans first three-pointer of the game early in the second period (U.S. was 0-of-8 from downtown to start the contest) to help extend the teams advantage, and Westbrook hit a pull up jumper at the 9:15 mark to increase the lead to 26-15 . Tunisia fought back however, thanks to Hadidane who hit three treys over the next four minutes to cut the deficit to five points, 35-30, with just over three minutes remaining in the half. The U.S. responded though with 11 unanswered points, and the Tunisian squad sank one last three-ball before the second quarter ended as he Americans took a 46-33 advantage into the half.
To start the third period, Coach K switched up the lineup and went with Anthony, Westbrook, Love, Andre Iguodala and Deron Williams on the court. The new lineup worked beautifully as they went on a 21-3 run, and turned a surprisingly close 13-point lead into a 67-36 affair midway through the third period.
The USA stroked three-ball after three-ball in the final quarter, with Love knocking down three 3-pointers in the final 3:15 of play. Tunisia was outscored 25-16 in the fourth quarter and the Americans went on to win 110-63.
With the victory, USA improves to 2-0 in Group A as the Tunisian’s, the only country without an NBA player on the roster, fall to 0-2.
The Americans next matchup is Thursday, Aug. 2, against the Nigerian National Team at 10:15 p.m. (5:15 p.m. ET), followed by Lithuania on Aug. 4 and concludes with Argentina on Aug. 6.
