2012 NBA Preseason (Quick Recap): Smith, Hawks top Wade-less Heat

I was able to catch most of the Hawks preseason opener against the Miami Heat on Sunday afternoon, so I figured I’d write down some initial impressions and vibes I received from the new-look Hawks.

  • Josh Smith is still incredible when he works his way into the paint, but still sucks as a jump shooter. Even with the stable of shooters in Atlanta, Smith fired up 20-footers like there was no tomorrow. It’s just something we’ll all have to live with, but when the totality of production is so stellar, it seems rather petty to complain.
  • Horford was a beast on the glass even though his 6 rebounds in 20 minutes doesn’t look earth-shattering. His overall activity around the basket was very encouraging, and if last season’s series against the Celtics was any indication, he will be the man this season (along with Josh Smith)
  • Lou Williams will score on anyone and everyone. I love his game and think he’ll probably be Atlanta’s go-to guy when in need of a bucket.
  • Sweet Lou also stuffed LeBron. Yeah, that happened. So Lou Williams is pretty much the greatest.
  • Speaking of LeBron, did he lose weight? Still jacked but seemed more slender.
  • Someone stop LeBron from dunking please; maybe some transition defense?
  • “Defense on LeBron??? In transition???” screams Damion James, “Of course not!”
  • Kyle Korver: “I echo that statement”
  • None of those were real quotes.
  • DeShawn Stevenson might have been the most pleasant surprise of the evening. He contributed offensively, so that already is more than anyone expected.
  • Jeff Teague made a few smart passes, but overall was a little flat to open the preseason. He needs to tune things up pretty quickly.
  • Where on earth was John Jenkins or Keith Benson? Why not let the first rounder get some run, and why not let Benson give Tolliver some PT competition?
  • Why did Petro play more minutes than Benson and Mike Scott combined? Oh I forgot, Drew didn’t even let Kito or Scott see the floor.
  • Put John Jenkins in the damn game
  • It seems like Anthony Tolliver is the front runner to snag the final roster spot, which to me is a little dissapointing. I was really hoping Benson, but when he doesn’t get any minutes, it’s pretty clear that he’s not in the lead.
  • Speaking of Tolliver, he’s not too bad, so I’ll get over it.
  • Chris Bosh was the best player on the floor, especially in the third quarter
  • Ray Allen looked fresh and those ankles looked fine
  • Dexter Pittman fouls everything. EVERYTHING
  • Damion James was a complete mess
  • James Anderson wasn’t much better
  • If both of them are struggling to do much of anything, again, why not give Jenkins any run? Doesn’t make sense to me. Also, why not let Isma’il Muhammad go out there? 15 bucks and a bag of chips says he converts those alley oops that James and Anderson both missed.
  • Korver was okay. The one three he made was beautiful. That shooting stroke is something else, isn’t it?
  • Ivan Johnson scared everyone
  • Ivan Johnson is still scary. Needed to be said twice.
  • Who is Caldrell Johnson? I want to see him play because I know nothing about him.
  • The ball movement seems to be a little sloppy early, but there were some interesting sets and some interesting pick and rolls. Things should pick up as the rust of the offseason fades.
  • The Hawks won. Yay!
