Brazilian center Lucas Nogueira might be spending next season in Atlanta after all.
There was speculation that with the recent signing of 6’11” European big man Pero Antić, the Hawks might stash Nogueria overseas to develop another year.
However, now it seems as if Nogueria will be playing in the NBA sooner rather than later as the Hawks are close to buying out his European contract, reports Emiliano Carchia of Sportando.
According to Carchia, the buyout was initially supposed to cost Atlanta $2 million but because Nogueira signed a contract with his European club Estudiantes one day before the NBA Draft, the buyout price was lowered to $1 million.
Somehow, Hawks President of Basketball Operations Danny Ferry managed to bring the price down even further.
Atlanta is allowed to contribute up to $550K toward a contract buyout, which could be the price Ferry has finagled Estudiantes down to, masterly I might add.
If all goes well, this year’s 16th overall draft pick in Nogueira will be playing alongside #17 selection Dennis Schröder and Pero Antić in Atlanta.
