Mike Muscala to Play in Spain Next Season, Signs with Blusens Monbus Obradoiro

Atlanta Hawks 2013 second-round draft pick Mike Muscala will play in Spain next season.

The 6’11” big man from Bucknell University tweeted late Wednesday night that he signed a contract with Blusens Monbus Obradoiro.

Blusens Monbus (also known as Río Natura Monbus for sponsorship reasons) is a professional basketball team based in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia and is part of the ACB League, the first tier level men’s professional basketball league in Spain.

“This is a great opportunity for Mike to play for a quality program in a strong league,” GM Danny Ferry told Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Hawks selected Muscala 44th overall in June’s 2013 NBA Draft. He appeared in five games at the Las Vegas Summer League, averaging 5.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per contest.

With Atlanta’s busy off-season acquisitions of frontcourt players such as Paul Millsap, Elton Brand, Pero Antic, and Gustavo Ayon, there didn’t appear to be many minutes available for Muscala.

Despite Muscala playing in Spain this upcoming season and not Atlanta, the Hawks will retain his draft rights.

“We are excited to closely monitor his growth as he further prepares himself for the NBA game,” Ferry said.
