Narrowly completing a triumphant comeback, Pero Antić and still winless Macedonia fell short in the second game of group play in EuroBasket 2013 and lost to Lithuania 75-67 on Thursday.
Macedonia (0-2) sits at the bottom of Group B, while Lithuania (1-1) chalked up their first win in group play.
Antić, the Atlanta Hawks’ new backup big man, had a solid game scoring 12 points and corralling eight rebounds.
Lithuania led by five points after the first period and maintained that advantage for practically the entire game. They went into halftime up by six points and finished the third quarter leading by seven. The obstacle grew larger for Macedonia as they trailed 63-50 with 7:45 in the fourth, however, the Macedonian squad persisted on and managed to score 12 straight points, cutting the deficit to 65-62 on a pair of free-throws from point guard Vlado Ilievski with just under three minutes left to play.
But that’s as close as it would get.
The Lithuanian team reeled off the next four points to take a 69-62 lead with 1:09 to go and then iced the game down the stretch with foul shots for a 75-67 victory.
Macedonia plays top-seeded Serbia on Friday.
