James Johnson was waived by the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, announced President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Danny Ferry via an official news release.
The move reduces the Hawks’ preseason roster to 17 players, so the team will still have two more cuts to make before next week’s deadline.
“We are getting closer to the season and they are hard decisions,” coach Mike Budenholzer said. “You have to make them and get closer and closer to the final roster.”
Johnson, a training camp invite, was competing with Cartier Martin for depth at the small forward position.
Johnson didn’t appear in Sunday’s game against Memphis but played in Atlanta’s first four preseason games, averaging 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest.
Of the 17 players remaining on the Hawks’ preseason roster, 12 have fully guaranteed contracts. Second-year forward Mike Scott has a partial guarantee worth 1ooK, while Shelvin Mack, Royal Ivey, Eric Dawson and Cartier Martin have non-guaranteed deals, putting them at risk of being waived by opening night.
