The Atlanta Hawks wrap up exhibition play in Dallas tonight at 8:30 p.m.
Don’t expect to see the usual cast of characters as Al Horford, Kyle Korver and Paul Millsap are all out for tonight’s preseason finale. Coach Budenholzer might even rest Jeff Teague and DeMarre Carroll and give his entire starting unit the night off.
Horford is suffering from a lingering hamstring injury he tweaked in last night’s preseason home finale against the Indiana Pacers. He played 29 minutes of action before being subbed for Pero Antic. Korver did not travel to Dallas for “personal reasons.” Hopefully it’s nothing serious and he’ll be able to play in the regular-season opener in a week. Millsap has a sore Achillies and was declared inactive for the final two preseason games by coach Mike Budenholzer Tuesday afternoon. Millsap re-aggravated the injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s matchup versus Memphis and did not return. He didn’t practice Monday and spent the latter portion icing his foot and receiving treatment.
Atlanta (1-5) has lost four straight, most recently last night as they got pulverized by the Pacers 107-89. They also fell to the Grizzlies Sunday afternoon 90-82 and dropped their home opener to the Spurs 106-104. Before that they went to Biloxi, Mississippi and got pounded by the Pelicans 105-73. The Hawks started the off preseason play splitting their first two exhibition games, which happened to be a back-to-back set, beating the Bobcats in Asheville 87-85 a night after losing the opener to the Heat in Miami 92-87.
The Hawks still need to trim their roster from 17 players down to 15 by Tuesday. They waived James Johnson Monday night and still have three training camp invites on the roster with Royal Ivey, Eric Dawson and Cartier Martin. Johnson and Martin were competing for depth at the small forward position, while Ivey and Shelvin Mack, who has a non-guaranteed deal but is not a training camp invite, are competing for third-string at the point guard position.
Tonight’s game is the last chance to impress the Hawks’ coaching staff as the four non-guaranteed players fight for the final two roster spots.
Hawks — Schroder / Jenkins / Martin / Scott / Brand
Mavericks — Calderon / Ellis / Marion / Nowitzki / Dalembert
Hawks — Al Horford (hamstring), Kyle Korver (personal reasons), Paul Millsap (Achilles), Gustavo Ayon (shoulder), Lou Williams (ACL rehab).
Mavericks — Devin Harris (left foot surgery), Shane Larkin (fractured right ankle), Brandan Wright (fractured left shoulder).
