Atlanta Hawks big man Pero Antic has been picked to play for Team Hill in the Rising Stars Challenge at All-Star Weekend in New Orleans.
In case you’re not familiar, the Rising Stars Challenge tips off the first night of the All-Star festivities on Friday and features a mix of the NBA’s top rookies and sophomores competing in a glorified pick-up game.
Former All-Star ballers and current Turner Sports NBA analysts Grant Hill and Chris Webber are the “general managers” of each team and were in charge of drafting the players. The draft occurred last night during a special edition of TNT NBA Tip-Off.
The head coaches for each team are the lead assistant coaches from the 2014 NBA All-Star Game coaching staffs. Indiana Pacers assistant Nate McMillan will coach Team Hill while Oklahoma City Thunder assistant Rex Kalamian will man the sidelines for Team Webber.
Joining Antic on Team Hill will be Giannis Antetokounmpo (SF/Bucks), Harrison Barnes (SF/Warriors), Bradley Beal (SG/Wizards), Damian Lillard (PG/Blazers), Dion Waiters (SG/Cavaliers) and Jonas Valanciunas (C/Raptors).
The opposing squad of Team Webber is headlined by hometown star Anthony Daivs (PF/Pelicans), who was the first pick, joined by Steven Adams (C/Thunder), Trey Burke (PG/Jazz), Tim Hardaway Jr. (SG/Knicks), Victor Oladipo (G/Magic), Kelly Olynyk (C/Celtics), Mason Plumlee (C/Nets), Jared Sullinger (PF/Celtics) and Michael Carter-Williams (PG/76ers).
The starters will be determined by fan voting. The announcement of the starting lineup will be made from the arena the night of the game.
It will be interesting to see if Antic is available to play in the game as he is currently in a walking boot because of a stress fracture in his ankle. When he got injured, the timetable for his return was said to be between 2-4 weeks. The injury occurred two weeks ago. Next week during the All-Star festivities will only be the three-week mark since Antic was put on the shelf. If he’s not healthy enough to play, it’s likely another player will take his place.
