Three-Point Contest: Marco Belinelli Wins Title In OT Shootout Over Bradley Beal

The three point contest was one to remember, with an underdog and possibly unknown competitor to many people taking home the trophy. Marco Belinelli brings the trophy back to San Antonio after a rare tiebreaker round.

Marco Belinelli staved off Bradley Beal in Championship Round Tiebreaker with 24 points to Beal’s 18 but this was necessary because of a tie in the Championship Round. Both players logged 19 points making a tiebreaker round necessary.

In the first round, all eight participants shot from the five racks in this new format. However, only one player from the Eastern Conference and one from the Western Conference would meet in the final round, per the new contest format.

The first round results were:

  • Marco Belinelli – 19
  • Bradley Beal – 21
  • Damian Lillard – 18
  • Arron Afflalo – 15
  • Kyrie Irving – 16
  • Kevin Love – 16
  • Stephen Curry – 16
  • Joe Johnson – 11

As I highlighted in the 3 point shootout 5 by 5 preview, Marco Belinelli puts a cap on a redemption half-season with this title. He topped the best shooters in the game as one of the least known in the competition. The All-Star Weekend never fails to offer up drama.
