NBA Trade Rumors: Knicks Trading Shumpert to Hawks for Teague?

With the dismal season the Knicks are suffering through, along with the team’s ineptitude at point guard, the New York franchise is looking to shake things up by Thursday’s trade deadline.

There were rumors the Knickerbockers were interested in trading for Toronto Raptors floor general Kyle Lowry about a month ago, but those talks have since died down.

Now a new player has emerged as a target for the Knicks, and that’s Atlanta Hawks stellar young point guard Jeff Teague, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein:

However, Stein does note that this could be a sticky situation because of Teague’s right to refuse any trade:

It’s clear New York is trying to cut ties with current starting point guard Raymond Felton as soon as possible. Hell, at this point the Knicks don’t even seem to mind who they could get in return, they just want anyone besides Felton:

Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com offers a different trade possibility:

One scenario to keep an eye on here, though, is the possibilty of a three-team deal also involving the Hawks and point guard Jeff Teague. Atlanta has all of its first-round picks in the next four drafts and could conceivably send one to Toronto to satisfy the Raptors’ demand for a future draft pick.

League sources say a scenario in which Teague ends up in Toronto, Shumpert goes to Atlanta and Lowry winds up in New York has been discussed. Another scenario could have Teague ending up in New York. The conversations are believed to be preliminary and have not reached an advanced stage.

Teague started the season extremely hot, but has since cooled down a bit. However, he’s still having his best season ever, averaging career-high’s in both points (15.6) and assists (7.2).

Felton, on the other hand, is arguably having his worst season ever, averaging a career-low 10.4 points per game.

But there’s still one huge question to ask: Who the hell could the Knicks possible offer in return for Teague?

Atlanta definitely wants no part of Felton and would probably only make a deal for either Iman Shumpert of sharpshooting rookie Tim Hardaway Jr. However, Hardaway Jr. may be out of the question since he’s the most promising prospect the Knicks have. But even if the Knicks did offer Shump, it wouldn’t be a straight up trade for Teague, the Hawks would definitely want more than just one player. It might be possible for the Knicks to land Teague if they added a first-round draft pick to the mix along with Shumpert, but that can’t happen either as they’ve already traded away all of their first-round draft picks for the next three years.

This is a fluid situation and shouldn’t be taken seriously as they’re just rumors. Is it possible trade talks could heat up before Thursday’s trade deadline? Sure. But until then, it’s purely just speculation.
