Atlanta Hawks veteran center Elton Brand tied Hall-of-Famer Elvin Hayes for 25th on the NBA’s all-time blocks list with two rejections against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night.
Brand and Hayes both have 1,771 career blocked shots.
The Hawks’ 14-year veteran was two swats away from tying Hayes entering Sunday’s game and managed to get that exact amount in a high scoring 129-120 loss at Phoenix.
Brand is Atlanta’s fourth-string center behind Al Horford, Pero Antic and Gustavo Ayon. However, with Horford and Ayon out with season-ending surgeries and Antic nursing a stress fracture in his right ankle the past four weeks, Brand has been the lone center and has been relied upon like no one could have projected. And, in a silver lining sort of way, Brand has been a blessing, logging huge minutes and anchoring the Hawks’ young defense.
Brand needs just one more block to pass Hayes and move into sole possession of 25th on the NBA’s all-time blocks list. He’ll get that opportunity Wednesday night in Portland.
Sitting right above at 24th all-time is current Golden State Warriors big man Jermaine O’Neal with 1,806 career blocks.
Brand has appeared in 50 games (9 starts), averaging 5.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 18.3 minutes per game through his first season with the Hawks — his 15th season overall.
