Atlanta Hawks 2013 first-round draft pick Lucas Nogueira returned to game action for club Estudiantes in Spain and helped lead them to an 86-80 win over Bilbao Basket on Sunday.
The 7’0″ center finished with eight points, on 4-for-4 shooting, to go with five rebounds, two blocks and one steal in 14 minutes off the bench.
It was Noguira’s first game back since December, when he suspended his contract with Estudiantes to seek medical treatment on his ailing knees. He traveled to Los Angeles and Atlanta to be examined and was diagnosed with severe knee tendinitis.
The 20-year-old Brazilian native is the only member of the Hawks’ 2013 draft class not currently in the NBA with Atlanta. Dennis Schroder, who the Hawks drafted out of Germany in the first-round 17th overall, has been the only rookie in the NBA/D-League since the start of the regular-season. Second-round draft pick Mike Muscala is with the Hawks now but started the season overseas in Spain with Río Natura Monbús, which is in the same league as Nogueira’s Estudiantes team — Liga Endesa, the top men’s professional basketball league in Spain.
Nogueira has appeared in seven games this season for Estudiantes and is averaging 6.0 points and 4.3 rebounds in 17 minutes per game. He will be back in action again on Saturday, March 8th, when Estudiantes takes on Tenerife Iberostar.
