According to the great Michael Scotto of SheridanHoops.com, the Atlanta Hawks worked out 7’3″ Spanish League center Walter Tavares on Friday.

Amazingly, as Scotto notes, Tavares has a standing reach that measures 9-feet and 10 inches — two inches short of the height of NBA-regulated hoops. Crazy!
Despite working out for NBA teams however, Tavares may be staying overseas for the foreseeable future as he reportedly signed a three-year extension with Gran Canaria of the Spanish ACB League on Thursday. It’s unclear if there are any NBA escape clauses in the deal, but it’s something of a 180-degree turn for Tavares, who had reportedly been moving toward a buyout from the Spanish club.
Any NBA team could draft the 7’3” center in the first round to secure his NBA rights while he continues to play overseas even if his contract doesn’t let him come to the U.S. anytime soon. He averaged 6.4 points and 6.0 rebounds in 21.5 minutes per game through 35 contests for Gran Canaria this season.
Tavares is the 39th-ranked prospect according to Chad Ford of ESPN.com.
Following the workout for the Hawks yesterday, Scotto reports Tavares will workout for the Memphis Grizzlies tomorrow.
