Coming off a double-digit loss on Saturday to start Summer League play, the Atlanta Hawks were hoping to rebound with a win Sunday against the D-League Select Team. But, as the Rolling Stones’ famous song goes, you can’t always get what you want.
The Hawks came up just shy of a victory, losing to the D-League Select Team 94-92 in sudden death double-overtime.
In Summer League, if a game remains tied after one extra quarter of play the first team to score in double-overtime wins.
Atlanta’s second-year point guard Dennis Schroder had the best game of his NBA career, scoring 30 points on 9-of-14 shooting. However, his stellar performance was overshadowed by the last play game when he saved a ball from going out of bounds with a no-look flip behind his back that bounced into the hands of D-League swingman Devin Ebanks for a gift wrapped layup that ended the game.
The Hawks had a few chances to win the possession prior to the winning layup, as Adreian Payne missed a turn-around jumper after corralling an offensive rebound and Casey Prather missed a tip-in on Payne’s misfire.
In the end, it was a thrilling game with a very sloppy finish and a losing outcome.
