The 2014 USA Basketball Men’s National Team has announced a 19-player roster for the upcoming training camp later this month, and Kyle Korver of the Atlanta Hawks is one of the lucky players who was selected.
The camp, which is the first of three that will be held, will take place in Las Vegas from July 28th to August 1st.
Korver was one of the initial players selected to Team USA’s 28-player pool back in January.
“Kyle, first all, is a veteran team player,” Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a conference call Monday. “And he is a specialist in being one of the outstanding shooters in the NBA. He will be looked at in that role. In (the Beijing Olympics in) 2008, Michael Redd filled that role for us. … He is a really good player and an outstanding shooter so we’ll look at him in that regard.
“If you look at the stats from (the 2012 Olympics in) London, we were by far the best 3-point shooting team. We took the most and made the most. That was really a dominating stat, along with assists because we shared the ball so well. Three-point shooting is always a huge part of what we look at as we put together a team. It’s a closer line than in the NBA and (the 3-point shot) is incorporated even more than it would be incorporated in the NBA and in the NBA it’s incorporated quite a bit.”
11 of the 28 players who won’t be on the training camp roster in Las Vegas are LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, LaMarcus Aldridge, Dwight Howard, Tyson Chandler, Andre Iguodala, David Lee, Kawhi Leonard, Russell Westbrook and Deron Williams. Most, if not all, of the 11 players withdrew their names from contention so they can spend the summer resting and getting prepared for the next NBA season.
The 18 other players who will be joining Korver and Team USA in Las Vegas are Kevin Durant, Paul George, Blake Griffin, James Harden, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Kevin Love, Derrick Rose, Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Bradley Beal, DeMarcus Cousins, Andre Drummond, Kenneth Faried, Gordon Hayward, along with recent additions DeMar DeRozan and Chandler Parsons.
The roster will likely be trimmed to 15 players after the first training camp ends August 1st, with the final 12 being selected after the second camp in Chicago and third-and-final camp concludes in New York, before Team USA departs for the World Cup of Basketball in Spain in late August.
