Exhibition games don’t mean anything, the only thing that matters is what you do in the tournament; that couldn’t be more true for the previously winless Atlanta Hawks.
Atlanta came into the 2014 Las Vegas Summer League single-loss elimination tournament with an 0-3 record, a #22 seed (out of 24 teams), and a first-round game against the defending Summer League champion Golden State Warriors.
It was safe to say the chips were stacked against the Hawks.
But that’s why you play the game!
Atlanta stunned Golden State and earned a 68-65 upset victory to advance to the second round and sent the defending Summer League champs to the consolation bracket, a.k.a. the loser’s bracket.
Hawks second-year point guard Dennis Schroder led all scorers with 17 points, while teammates Trevor Releford and Mike Muscala each added 14.
The Warriors were led by Justin Holiday with 15 points, while Nemanja Nedovic added 14.
