VIDEO: Adreian Payne Accepts ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, Nominates Teammate Dennis Schroder

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has swept the nation and made its way over to the NBA and the Atlanta Hawks.

The challenge, in which a person dumps a bucket of ice water over their head, is to spread awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and encourage donations to research. 

ALS is a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement.

Hawks 2014 first-round pick Adreian Payne is the first current player — mascot Harry The Hawks was the first member to do it — on the team to record and post his completion of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. He was nominated by fellow rookie Nik Stauskas of the Sacramento Kings.

Payne completed the deed, and walked away with battle scars to prove it, and will now pass the challenge on to teammate Dennis Schröder, among others.
