5 Bold Predictions For The Atlanta Hawks In 2014-15
By Jay Desai
4. Dennis Schroder Will Win The Backup Point Guard Job
Dennis Schroder was absolutely spectacular for the Atlanta Hawks in Summer League. He showed great pace, averaging 15.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He was easily of the best Summer League players for the Hawks, even putting up a monster 30-point performance against the D-League Select Team.
After Schroder’s big performance in Las Vegas, many believed he was primed to take on a big role for the Hawks, potentially as the team’s backup point guard. However, GM Danny Ferry may have put those plans on temporary hold with the re-signing of Shelvin Mack.
Mack was the backup point guard for the Hawks last year after taking the job from Schroder. He played marvelously in that role, averaging 7.5 points and 3.7 assists per game.
While Mack may be the backup point guard for now, I assure you Schroder will take it at some point during next season.
Mack is finally financially secured after playing previous seasons without that stability. Now that he has a multi-year deal, he may rest a bit and potentially slip from his backup point guard role.
Also, Schroder doesn’t want to go back and play in the D-League, and he won’t have to if he can translate his work in Summer League to the regular season.
With Schroder motivated to take back the backup point guard role from Mack, and Mack being financially secure, the potential is there for Schroder to leapfrog Mack and take that backup point guard job.
