The Top 5 Remaining Free Agent Targets for Atlanta Hawks
3. Gary Neal
What makes Neal an attractive player for the Hawks is that he can play both guard positions. Listed at 6’4″, 210 pounds, he played for the Wizards last season. Unlike the previous two players on this list, it appears Neal has plenty of fuel left in the tank. Last season in 52 games he averaged 21.4 minutes per game, 10.5 PPG, 1.7 RPG, and 1.6 APG. He had a field goal percentage of .410 and converted .378 percent of his three-point tries.
With Kyle Korver aging, DeAndre Bembry adjusting to the NBA, and Tim Hardaway Jr. struggling to maintain any consistency, Neal could strengthen the shooting guard position a lot. The Hawks are excellent in terms of the amount of field goals that are the result of an assist, ranking behind only the Spurs last season. Nobody cares who gets the shot or scores the points as long as it’s a great look.
He signed with the Spurs back in 2010 as a rookie after spending one season in Europe. He would go on to play 3 years there before spending time with several different teams. He had some outstanding performances in the 2013 Finals, scoring 24 points with seven assists in the game six loss to the Miami Heat. His contract last year paid him $3.25 million and he is only 31 years old. He does have some durability concerns as he hasn’t played more than 52 games in any of the past four seasons because of injury. With that in mind, he could be signed for a steal of a price.
