Since we’ve already covered the Hawks current point guard situation at length earlier, this will be all about Mario Chalmers. The main reason why he is ranked this high is because he is rich in championship pedigree. He has been to the top of the mountain as a key player for the Miami Heat winning titles in 2012 and 2013. He also won an NCAA championship in 2008 as the starting point guard for the Kansas Jay Hawks. Aside from Tiago Splitter, Atlanta doesn’t have any players with rings. That type of experience would be a valuable addition to the whole team.

There are some players that just have ice water in their veins and can absolutely be called “clutch”. Believe it or not, Chalmers actually is one of those guys. The Hawks have a super-sized problem in that particular area right now. It’s something that I find baffling and distressing as well. There isn’t a good excuse for not getting a shot off at the end of a game when you’ve had a full possession. It’s not difficult to be aware of how much time is left. Until they bring in a closer of any kind, my nice television set will remain in danger.

There are quite a few holes in Chalmers’ game, especially if his role would be greater than it should. He is not crafty at all in terms of making plays for others averaging only 2.5 assists per game for his career. He also doesn’t fair too well finishing in traffic, but he can really heat up from the outside. On 01/12/13 against the Kings he hit 10 three-pointers which tied for Miami’s franchise record. He currently sports a .358 career three point shooting percentage. Mario would provide a steady, consistent hand off the bench as a shooter. With the ink on the depth chart already dry, it is unlikely that the Hawks are in the market for Chalmers. But if things change, they could do a lot worse.
