When you say “Atlanta Hawks,” the first player that should pop into your head is Dominique Wilkins. Also known as “The Human Highlight Film,” Wilkins made all of his nine NBA All-Star appearances as a Hawk.
Throughout his 12 seasons with the Hawks, Wilkins compiled what seemed to be countless accomplishments. He made seven All-NBA teams (First Team 1x, Second Team 4x, and Third Team 2x) while also being crowned the NBA scoring champion in 1986 after averaging 30.3 points per game.
His No. 21 jersey was retired by the team in 2001 and rightfully so. The two-time NBA Slam Dunk Champion is the franchise-leader in points, games, minutes, and two-point field goal makes according to basketball-reference.
There are very few statistical categories in Hawks history where Wilkins’ name doesn’t appear in the top-10.
Unfortunately, Wilkins played during arguably the best basketball era in history. In the Eastern Conference, he had to deal with Larry Bird and Michael Jordan. Like so many other all-time greats, those two players alone kept many from ever winning a championship. Wilkins was a victim added to that list.
He ranks 40th in NBA history with 38,113 minutes played,14th with an average of 24.8 points per game, and 12th with 26,668 total points.
Wilkins was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
