Steve Smith was acquired by the Hawks via trade along with Grant Long and a second-round pick early in the 1994-95 season.
He made his lone All-Star appearance while he played for the Hawks in 1998.
During his five seasons with the team, Smith averaged 18.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. He ranks fifth in franchise history with 549 made 3-pointers, ninth with averages of 18.6 points and 36.8 minutes per game, and tenth with a 84.5 free-throw percentage.
In 1999, Smith was traeded to the Portland Trail Blazers where he would play two seasons before being traded again in 2001, this time, to the San Antonio Spurs. Smith won an NBA Championship with the Spurs in 2003, and flourished in head coach Gregg Popovich’s system. In 2001-02, Smith shot a blistering 47.2 percent from deep, which was his career-high.
Smith spent one season at both New Orleans and Charlotte before being dealt back to Miami, the team who drafted him, where he retired in 2005.
