The St. Louis Hawks considered themselves lucky when All-American point guard Lenny Wilkens fell to them with the sixth overall pick of the 1960 NBA Draft.
Immediately, Wilkens came in an established respect with his teammates by leading the Hawks to the 1961 NBA Finals and averaging 11.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game during his rookie campaign.
During his eight seasons with the Hawks, Wilkens was named an NBA All-Star five times. In the 1971 NBA All-Star game, he won MVP after scoring 21 points off the bench.
Once the team moved to Atlanta in 1968, Wilkens was traded to the Seattle Supersonics. Wilkens ranks fourth in franchise history with 3,049, sixth with an average of 5.5 assists per game, and tenth with 19,552 minutes played.
Wilkens was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1989.
