Long before “The Jet” was an NBA playoffs hero with the Mavericks or a very odd fit at point guard for the Houston Rockets, Jason Terry was the best player on some absolutely dismal Hawks teams.
Taken by the Hawks with the 10th overall pick of the 1999 NBA Draft, Terry was put on a roster where his talent could stand out. Terry was mostly eased along in his rookie year, only seeing 23.3 minutes per game. But in his second season, “The Jet” took off. Terry exploded for a career-high scoring average of 19.7 points per game, while racking up five assists as well.
Terry was a steady scoring and distributing presence with the Hawks, as more of a combo guard for the first three seasons. Then moved him to point guard full-time for his final two seasons with the team.
Once becoming a full-time starter, Terry averaged 18.3 points per game in four seasons with Atlanta and was also good for 5.8 assists per game. He ranks eighth in steals, tenth in assists, and fourth in three-point field goals made in Hawks history.
But the Hawks were unable to keep Terry long-term because they never won more than 35 games in a season with him. But while he was in town, Terry was one of the most dynamic players in the NBA and is still one of the best point guards to ever take the floor for the Hawks.
