Top Ten Atlanta Hawks Games of the 2016-17 Season: Honorable Mentions
Thabo v. Melo
New York Knicks @ Atlanta Hawks – December 28, 2016
Hawks win, 112-108/OT
The Hawks and Knicks played some great games against each other. The late-December gets the short end of the stick here, as the two January matchups were much more memorable.
One of the few moments fans may remember from this game is the confrontation between Thabo Sefolosha and Carmelo Anthony that eventually led to Anthony’s ejection from the game in the second quarter. What followed that ejection was a great game that went into overtime after Derrick Rose and Schroder both missed potential game-winning jumpers in the closing seconds of regulation.
The overtime period itself was also very suspenseful. Atlanta didn’t trail again in overtime after Sefolosha’s three-ball made it 89-88 with 3:54 left for the game’s 16th lead change. Down 100-97 with three seconds left in overtime, Kristaps Porzingis had a chance to tie the game after getting fouled on a three-point attempt. Porzingis missed two of the three free throws and Millsap made a pair of free throws to ice the game. It was a highly intense and competitive game that barely missed the list.
