The Atlanta Hawks are moving forward in their search for a new general manager. Which name would be the best fit?

The Atlanta Hawks’ search for a new general manager is in full-swing. Until today, three names had emerged as possible candidates. Those names being David Griffin, Joe Dumars, and Troy Weaver.

Griffin and Weaver drew intrigue from Hawks fans, while Dumars caused groans. Of course, no concrete details have emerged about which candidate the Hawks are most serious about pursuing. Speculation is all that exists.

Thanks to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, we can speculate on a few more names. An article posted today lists a four more possible candidates.

"The Magic are competing with the Atlanta Hawks, who have a general manager opening. Atlanta is considering a number of candidates, including Griffin, Joe Dumars, Houston vice president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas, and New York Knicks director of player personnel Mark Hughes, sources said. Atlanta is also planning to discuss the GM opening with television analysts and former players Chauncey Billups and Brent Barry, league sources told The Vertical.Houston has granted permission to Atlanta to discuss the opening with Rosas, its No. 2 executive behind GM Daryl Morey, league sources said."

There you have it. Gersson Rosas would be an interesting hire. Given Houston’s reliance on analytics one could assume he would implement a similar culture in Atlanta. If Mark Hughes is hired let’s hope he doesn’t bring any of the Knicks’ basketball culture with him. They can keep the triangle.

Brent Barry and Chauncey Billups are surprising names, but this type of move isn’t unheard of in the NBA. Steve Kerr has walked from the broadcast booth to a front office and from the broadcast booth to the head coach’s chair. Hawks fans should keep an open mind about the possibility of hiring someone with limited front office experience. The right fit is what matters most.
