20th Overall Pick

With the 20th pick, the Hawks kept Dion Glover in Atlanta.

The Georgia Tech star, who went to Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood, came out of college after an impressive freshman campaign.  He averaged 18.4 points, 5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.1 steals in 33 games, and looked like an elite talent. Alongside future NBA player Matt Harpring, Georgia Tech went 19-14 and advanced to the third round of the NIT, before bowing out to Penn State.

Glover’s impact was not expected to be immediate as a 21-year old. He played 30 games in his debut season, even starting a game against the Mavericks late in the season.  His 6.5 points per game on 38.6 percent shooting was not ideal but gave much room for improvement.  The next season, Glover’s scoring average dropped to 5.9 points, but his shooting percentage rose to 42 percent. During his third season, Glover started in 25 of his 55 games, averaging a career-high 8.9 points and 3.1 rebounds. The next year, he topped both of these numbers, averaging 9.7 points and 3.7 rebounds and starting in 42 games. At 24, Glover looked to be a good player for years to come.

Two years, and two teams later, Glover was out of the league. The Hawks dealt him to Toronto midway through the 2004 season, where he played 14 games. He went on to play 7 games for the Spurs before being cut. Currently, Glover is an assistant coach in the D-League for the Grand Rapids Drive.
