An aspect of the game that would help Dwight mesh better in the offense, would be to move more without the ball. He’s not the most flat footed of big men, but that shouldn’t stop him from setting a greater quantity of screens.

If coach Bud’s top priority is indeed outside shooting and the spacing of the floor, it would make sense for Howard to be screening away from the ball to free up shooters on the perimeter. When the likelihood of a pass to him on the block is minuscule, why not put pressure on his defender by being active further away from the rim?

It’s also going to be important for him and Dennis Schroder to have a better rapport. They tried frequently to establish a two-man game with the pick and roll, but the chemistry wasn’t always there. Often Dwight would bobble his passes, dropping the ball out of bounds. You’d see Schroder be off the mark with arrant lob passes, sending them sailing into the stands at least once a game.

Keeping his moral up would probably increase his efficiency and statistics as well. An all- star caliber season shouldn’t be completely out of reach for Dwight Howard. If he isn’t in the conversation, something is wrong.

Mike Budenholzer is one of the top coaches in the league. Which is why watching him fail to utilize Dwight to his advantage after he had all season to figure it out, was devastating. Hopefully, it will be a better outcome this time next year. They’re going to have to make it work because if they don’t, the Hawks will likely continue to struggle going forward.
