A dominant performance and then a dramatic finish

On Wednesday, the BayHawks shined against Agua Caliente 121-101. Raphiael Putney and two-way player Andrew White led the way with 22 points each. However, the big story was John Gillon. The reserve guard recorded a double-double of 20 points and 10 assists.

Saturday night, Erie was down as much as 13 points to the Greensboro Swarm before battling back to take a three-point lead.

With less than a minute remaining, Damien Wilkins hit a 3-pointer late to tie the game and send it to overtime. After the Hornets took a 104-102 lead, Andrew White couldn’t tie the game as he missed the second of two free throws. After a defensive stop, Josh Magette iced the game with a mid-range jumper as time expired.

Magette finished with another double-double performance, 16 points and 16 assists on the night. Jaylen Morris stepped up in key moments as he finished with 21 points.

Hornets two-way player Marcus Paige finished with 17 points and 5 assists.

News and Notes

  • Jeremy Evans scored a double-double in each game this week including a 16-point, 11-assist outing in the win over Greensboro.
  • Former Erie BayHawk Roscoe Smith scored 20 points against his old team Saturday night. He’s averaged 13 points and 5 rebounds per game this season.
  • Beau Beech has seen some playing time lately. He had an 8-point outing, which included 2 for 3 from beyond the arc Wednesday afternoon.
  • Before Wednesday’s double-double by Josh Gillon, he has been used sparingly through his first season in the G-League, playing in only 20 games and averaging 4.4 points.

What’s next for the BayHawks?

Despite winning their last 9 of 11, Erie is still neck and neck with the Lakeland Magic in the Southeast Division.

It will be tough to make some space on February 21st as they travel to Ontario to face a Raptors 905 team that’s had their number this season. The 905 will not have Bruno Cabloco this time, as he was traded and then released by the Sacramento Kings at the deadline. With Cabloco gone, expect Lorenzo Brown to take over that role.

On Friday the 23rd, the BayHawks stay on the road as they travel to Windy City. Antonio Blakeney has been a scoring machine for the Bulls G-League affiliate — averaging nearly 33 points a game.

Erie returns home Saturday night to take on the Canton Charge, who beat the BayHawks in dramatic fashion on January 19th.
