Atlanta Hawks: 5 Most Interesting Big Men in 2018-19
By Chris Guest
#2 – Omari Spellman
The most interesting rookie big man on the roster is Omari Spellman, who the Hawks drafted 30th overall with a pick they obtained from the Rockets.
While the selection of Spellman was puzzling at the outset (especially with a wide range of interesting players still on the board at #30), his performance in Summer League certainly tantalized with a wide-ranging and raw skill set that could have any number of outcomes.
Though Spellman was surely drafted to try and recreate Draymond Green’s role with the Golden State Warriors (which Hawks GM Travis Schlenk helped to build), his jump shot is already a far more developed tool than Draymond’s is.
An older rookie, Spellman will play next season at the age of 21, but he still has plenty of time to develop and improve his game playing alongside another fellow young Hawks big man, who is the #1 choice for our most interesting big man on the Hawks roster in 2018-19.
#1 – John Collins
Was there ever any doubt? One of the best players on the Atlanta Hawks last year, who was snubbed by the Dunk Contest and the First Team All-NBA voting, John Collins completely decimated Summer League in limited action and is the clear-cut #1 option as the most interesting Atlanta Hawks big man in 2018-19.
In an incredibly productive and entertaining rookie year, Collins led the Hawks in PER (18.3), true shooting percentage (62%) and win shares (5.4) – a stunning feat for a rookie that was picked 5 spots outside of the lottery.
Atlanta Hawks General Manager nailed the selection of Collins, as he looks to be an important part of the team’s future for years to come.
With supreme athleticism, a projectable three-point shot and some defensive improvement, Collins looks as if he could serve as the team’s center of the future for years to come. After seeing dunks like this all season long last year, that works for us:
