Shareef Abdur-Rahim didn’t stay with the Hawks for very long, but from 2001-2004, he made his presence felt as one of the premier slashers in the NBA. Abdur-Rahim arrived to the Hawks in a 2001 offseason trade that sent Pau Gasol, Brevin Knight and Lorenzen Wright to the Vancouver Grizzlies.

He led the Hawks in scoring his first season (2001-02) in with 21.2 points per game. As their main offensive weapon, he led the team with 99 dunks. He ranked 17th in the league back during a time when a guy by the name of Shaquille O’Neal was running things in the paint. Shaq finished with 329 dunks that season.

Abdur-Rahim earned the only All-Star nod of his career during the 2001-02 season. He also produced 9.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.1 blocks per contest. The following season, he registered 93 dunks while putting up 19.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.1 steals per contest.

Abdur-Rahim was well ahead of his time in terms of his ability to get to the rim and score at will. At 6-foot-9, he had the size of a power forward, but the skills of a versatile guard. He had the innate ability to grab the rebound and take the ball the length of the floor to the rim at any moment.

By the 2003-04 season, the Hawks traded Abdur-Rahim along with Dan Dickau and Theo Ratliff to the Portland Trail Blazers for Wesley Person and Rasheed Wallace. He was evidence of what could have been with different players around him.
