Atlanta Hawks: 15 Best Dunkers of All-Time
Spud Webb measured at just 5-foot-6 at the point guard, but that didn’t stop him from playing above the rim for much of his NBA career. Webb was a three-time Slam Dunk Contest participant during the 1985-86 season,1987-88 season and 1988-89 season. Despite his small frame, Webb wasn’t shy about getting to the rim. In fact, he won the 1986 Slam Dunk Contest over teammate Dominique Wilkins.
Webb and Wilkins had an epic duel for the Slam Dunk title back during the 1986 All-Star Weekend. In a contest where Wilkins figured he had the game won, Webb saved his best dunk for last, sealing the victory with a self alley-oop. Despite his small stature, he took him the championship from Dominique Wilkins, an equally talented dunker at the same token.
Webb took the league by storm when he was selected 87th overall in the 1985 NBA Draft out of North Carolina State. He grew into his role as a reserve during his rookie season, averaging 7.8 points, 4.3 assists, 1.6 rebounds and 1.0 steals per contest through 79 appearances.
He wasn’t known for doing a lot of his dunks in-game, but his victory over Dominique Wilkins certainly raised his profile. By the 1990-91 season, Webb started in 64 of the 75 appearances he made, averaging 13.4 points, 5.6 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals per contest.
