Improve Mobility

Currently, there is one red flag that may hinder or affect Spellman’s transition to the NBA. Often times in his collegiate career, the young forward struggled with his mobility. At times Spellman struggles to effectively serve as a roll man in the pick & roll.

In order to be effective in Atlanta, Spellman needs to work on his lateral movement to help improve his one-on-one defense as well. Even though the rookie looked great in his summer debut, there were times where he seemed a bit sluggish.

One question that remains to be answered is can Spellman adjust to the team’s defensive scheme and rotate effectively. Frequently, we see younger players struggle to remain in the lineup due to their inability to grasp defensive schemes.

As time goes on, the coaching staff will work with Spellman and help him improve on his footwork. Atlanta most likely will rely on the pick & roll and it’s important for the young rookie to be able to cut to the basketball or pop out for an open three.
