The Atlanta Hawks have been provided an over/under for wins of 23.5. The RealGM Radio crew breaks it down in a recent podcast.

The tremendous RealGM Radio podcast, hosted by analytical mastermind Danny Leroux of The Athletic and the Dunc’d On Basketball podcast, recently covered the over/unders for the Eastern Conference, which included the Atlanta Hawks first and foremost. RealGM joined the list of podcasts to cover the Hawks wins according to Vegas oddsmakers, with Game Theory leading the charge a few weeks back.

Leroux was quite happy with where the line was sitting for the Hawks, as it seems likely that the team will not be particularly good next season as they reload and help develop the young guys at the expense of winning many games.

Arturo Galletti, Leroux’s guest on the pod, was also quite happy with where the line was but felt that the under was probably the more likely scenario.

Since the Atlanta Hawks have their own pick next season and are firmly committed to the rebuild (i.e. likely tanking down the end of the year), they will likely want to play fast and loose, racking up possessions for their young guns to flex their offensive muscle.

That being said, a run-and-gun playstyle rarely ever leads to victories, especially in a situation as new and unexplored as this Atlanta Hawks team is.

Both Leroux and Galletti had plenty of praise for Trae Young, who they believe to be a very good player, but they also noted that it will probably take some time for the rather slight point guard to adjust to the bruising physicality of the modern NBA (though he has already shown a knack in Summer League for drawing heaps of fouls).

“He’s going to be a good player,” Galletti said. “It’s just going to take him a while to get there.”

The pair agreed, in the end, that 23.5 for wins for the Hawks, while fair, was not an easy enough choice to bet on – though Trae Young’s 12 to 1 odds for rookie of the year perked up their ears.
