Seven takeaways from the Atlanta Hawks first home game of the season – a victory over the Mavs of the comeback variety.

The Atlanta Hawks unveiled their new State Farm Arena last night against the Dallas Mavericks and managed to pull out a gutsy win in the 4th quarter after being down by as many as 26.

Though Trae Young struggled early and was outshone by fellow rookie Luka Doncic through the first three quarters, Young showed out in the 4th quarter scoring 12 of his 17 points in the final 5:13 of the 4th quarter.

With the help of a career night for Kent Bazemore (more on that shortly), the Hawks christened the newly minted State Farm Arena with a memorable home victory. The stadium was rocking from tip-off, but the crowd didn’t get truly raucous until the Hawks took their first lead on three Young free throws.

We’ve pulled together some of the most notable takeaways from what was an amazing contest between the Hawks and Mavs, starting with…

Another 40-Point Quarter Allowed

The Hawks started off this game in spectacularly poor fashion. Doncic, Dennis Smith Jr. and Wesley Matthews all came out with a fire in their eyes that caught the young Hawks off-guard. As has happened in each of the Atlanta Hawks first four games (yuck), the Hawks gave up a 40-point quarter to the opposing team. This time, the total was 42 in the 1st quarter as the Mavs raced out to a 42-22 lead after 1 – meaning Dallas was on pace to outscore the Hawks 168-88. Luckily, that did not end up being the case.
