Atlanta Hawks: 3 Takeaways After Home Loss to Pacers
Kent Bazemore Strikes Again
Despite the constant reminder of being on the trading block, Kent Bazemore tied his career high by dropping 32 points tonight. Bazemore’s scoring contribution was an important factor in the Hawks effort tonight.
Needless to say, the 29-year-old’s energy helped give this team a chance to win tonight. He also recorded four assists and two steals. The Hawks are at their best when they move the ball from side to side, run on the break and rotate on defense.
Unlike most, Bazemore marvels at the opportunity to guard other team’s best player. Oladipo finished tonight’s game with 16 points which is 4.2 points under his season average.
When it comes to guarding Oladipo the opposing team has to game-plan for his speed, versatility and heavy usage of pick and rolls. Not to mention he has improved his range from the previous seasons.
Even though Bazemore could be traded at any moment his positive attitude and ability to motivate his teammates speaks volumes.
Turnovers Come Back to Haunt Atlanta
Unfortunately, the Atlanta Hawks were plagued by turnovers this game. In tonight’s game, the young team turned the ball over 19 times (which is better than 20).
A few times throughout the game the Hawks gathered some momentum but then lost it due to critical turnovers. Again turnovers are guaranteed to happen when running the fast break. However, this team turns the ball over due to their lack of urgency or overpassing (at times).
But the young Southeast team is still learning the importance of ball movement and floor balance. On the bright side, Atlanta only turned the ball over 16 times in their last two games.
On the flip side, the Hawks forced the Pacers to commit 16 turnovers, which is huge. This team will be tough to beat if they hang their hat on the defensive end of the floor (shout out to coach Pierce).
