Atlanta Hawks: 15 greatest scorers in franchise history
4. John Drew, Forward, 1974-82
John Drew is another one of those prolific scorers that enjoyed their best seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. From 1974-82, Drew made a name for himself as one of the more efficient scorers in the Hawks’ rotation.
Drew made All-Rookie honors in his first year (1974-75) after being drafted 25th overall by Atlanta in the 1974 NBA Draft. He averaged 18.5 points per contest on 42.8 percent shooting from the field that season.
In 1975-76, he made his first All-Star appearance after putting up 21.6 points per game on 50.2 percent shooting from the floor. It was the first of four consecutive seasons that he averaged over 20 points per contest.
He averaged a career-high 24.2 points per game in 1976-77, finishing seventh among the NBA top scorers that season. Drew racked up 15 games with 40 points or more and 100 games with 30 points or more.
Drew is one of four players with 100 career games or more scoring 30 points under their belt. It’s not bad company to be in given his status on this list of best scorers. He is also a member of the 50-point club, a feat he achieved during the 1978-79 campaign.
He scored a career-high 50 points on 19-of-32 (59.4 percent) shooting from the floor in a 113-87 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Only three players have more than one 50-point game under their belt, so it’s not an easy feat, especially in a league without a 3-point line.
