Atlanta Hawks: 15 greatest scorers in franchise history
12. Steve Smith, Shooting Guard, 1995-99
Steve Smith was quite the journeyman during his NBA career, but his stop with the Atlanta Hawks was memorable enough. He appeared with them for five seasons as one of their primary scorers and it was where he made the lone All-Star appearance of his career.
Smith put up over 1,400 total points in three consecutive seasons as a member of the Hawks. Consider them his growth years as his average went from 18.1 points per game to 20.1 points per contest from 1995-98.
During his fourth year with the Hawks, he produced 20.1 points while shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and 35.1 percent from 3-point land, a season where he made the All-Star squad. He scored a career-high 41 points against the Utah Jazz on Jan. 30, 1997, though it came in a 102-96 loss.
Smith also holds the record for most points in overtime (13). He finished that game with 20 points in a 117-105 victory over the Washington Bullets.
He owns 18 performances of 30-points or more and one performance of 40 points or more during his career with the Atlanta Hawks. Through 1995-99, he averaged 18.6 points per game through 339 appearances (320 starts) on 43 percent shooting from the field and 33.7 percent from behind the arc.
Smith ranks 19th on the Hawks all-time franchise history with 6,291 total and he could have finished higher had he not been traded away. During the 1999 offseason, he was shipped off to the Portland Trail Blazers with Ed Gray for Jim Jackson and Isaiah Rider.
