#16. Orlando Magic – Romeo Langford
The Orlando Magic have long been searching for the team’s ballhandler of the future. Though veteran D.J. Augustin provided the team with a thrilling upset in Game 1 of its first playoff series since the Dwight Howard era.
Despite that, Augustin is not a long-term option, and with the status of Markelle Fultz unknown going forward, the Magic would be smart to take swing on Romeo Langford, yet another vaunted prospect who has fallen down this draft board due to various issues in his game (though he would still be a good fit on the Atlanta Hawks if they felt like taking him late in the lottery).
For Langford, it’s the lack of shooting that has doomed his stock. Langford shot only 27.2 percent from deep in his freshman season, which is certainly not encouraging. Though his form looks good, the shots just didn’t go down.
Despite that, Langford proved he was a solid defender in college and his good size (6-foot-6, 211 pounds, 6-foot-11 wingspan) means he projects to be switchable across at least three positions – perhaps four if he can pack on some more strength at the next level.
The Magic have long adored wingspan ever since John Hammond took over as General Manager and took lanky, long-limbed big men Jonathan Isaac and Mohamed Bamba in back-to-back drafts. Here, Hammond still stays within his purview of athletic marvels while also nabbing a player at a position of need. It’s a win-win!
