January

Record: 5-9

Best Win: v. OKC

Worst Loss: @ Sacramento

While they weren’t as successful as December record-wise, the Atlanta Hawks were still able to make strides in developing the young nucleus.

John Collins had a career night on the 23rd, going for 35 points, making 14 of his 16 shots. Trae Young followed that up by making 11 of 15 for 30 points. It was earlier in the month however when the two put their powers together, combining for 50 points against Oklahoma City, one of the league’s most vaunted defenses.

The top three scorers for Atlanta in January were John Collins, Trae Young and Kevin Huerter, the latter had just broken into the starting 5 and was playing like a seasoned veteran, not like the post-lottery rookie he is. He led the team in minutes on the month.

The team still struggled with turnovers, which they struggled with all year, but with January seeing two of their more experienced players, Taurean Prince and Kent Bazemore, out with injuries, a potential explanation arises for why this month was especially bad in that category.

Things went out on a low note, as once again they were shook by the Kings in embarrassing fashion. This was right in the middle of the well-reported “Super Bowl” road trip that saw the Hawks play 7 straight away from State Farm Arena.

Coming into the season fans were hoping for a team that was at least competitive when losing, and one that saw the young players develop, and that’s exactly what is happening. It started in December, grew in January, and continued the rest of the season.
