The third-best prospect on the board is R.J. Barrett, Zion’s teammate at Duke, though some would argue that Barrett might be a better long-term player than Morant. No one (no one sensible at least) is claiming that R.J. has better long-term prospects than Zion, however.
For Barrett, he showcased a well-rounded skill set once Zion went down with an injury after his shoe memorably exploded due to overuse on a hulking, burly young man who seemingly can leap tall buildings in a single bound.
Barret’s shot profile in college can be described as one of a volume scorer. Per Bart Torvik, Barrett attempted more than 200 shots from all three levels (at-rim, non-rim two-pointers and from three), and he was the only player in the Top 50 of rim attempts who also attempted 200 each of the other two shot styles.
That volume came from having the greenest of lights on a shooting-challenged Duke team, while also being the single-best high school recruit in the 2019 NBA Draft class.
Though the Knicks were certainly “not tryin’ for Zion,” all that tanking only led to the 3rd overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, which is fine if they’re planning on trading it. In this scenario, another team lands the vaunted Anthony Davis via trading the next pick in this article…
