Backup Shooting Guard: Cam Reddish

Right out of the gate, this might be a rather surprising choice.

However, when you dig a bit deeper, slotting in Cam Reddish as the team’s backup shooting guard on day one makes a lot of sense. Atlanta Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce has already shown a willingness to throw the rookies into the deep end on their first day on the job – as he did with Trae Young in his first season.

Last year, Young played in Utah Summer League, Vegas Summer League, the preseason and all but one regular season game. The results were staggeringly impressive, as he cemented himself as the best rookie in franchise history. Could Reddish provide a similar spark off the bench as the immediate backup to Huerter?

Huerter is the obvious choice to start, but behind him, there are a variety of options that the team could opt for as the backup shooting guard du jour.

Throughout the entirety of the 2019 NBA pre-draft process, it became apparent that the Atlanta Hawks were extremely high on Cam Reddish. So much so, that the Hawks were not willing to include the #10 overall pick in the draft in the deal with the New Orleans Pelicans to move up to #4 and select De’Andre Hunter.

Why? Atlanta Hawks GM Travis Schlenk had his sights set on Reddish there.

With that kind of backing and willingness to take a chance on a talented but flawed prospect, slotting Reddish in as the team’s opening day backup to Huerter seems like a wise choice.

But now, who follows Huerter and Reddish?
