Our player goals series continues with the record-breaking 22nd season for Atlanta Hawks veteran Vince Carter.

When it was announced that Vince Carter was returning to the Atlanta Hawks for his final season in the NBA (during which he will turn 43 years young), this particular site was sent into a joyous rapture as it will be wonderful to seen an NBA icon close out his storied career in a Hawks jersey.

Of course, for next season, Carter will be far more important than just a talisman. Carter was one of the smartest players on the court for the Hawks last season, which should always be the case for a player that’s been in the league for longer than many Atlanta Hawks players have even been alive!

Read on to explore Vince’s goals for 2019-20.

On-Court Coaching

One of Carter’s most important talents is helping the young guns on the Atlanta Hawks learn the game on the fly as a nominal player-coach. Though Carter still enjoys getting up for high-flying dunks every now and again, he seems to be a terrific communicator on the court with his young teammates – helping them to get in correct position and knowing where to be on both ends of the court.

Keep the Three-Balls Flying

Vinsanity is 6th all-time in NBA history in three-pointers made (2229) and 5th in three-point attempts (5966) per Basketball Reference. Last season, Carter shot a rock-solid 38.9 percent from deep, which was, stunningly, second only to Taurean Prince on the entire team. If Carter can recreate or improve upon that number next season, it would be a huge boon for a young Hawks squad that’s hungry to begin winning.

Defensive Acumen

According to Cleaning the Glass, one might be surprised to find out that Carter had the best on/off defensive rating on the Atlanta Hawks last season. With VC playing, the Hawks gave up 4.2 less points per 100 possessions – showcasing Carter’s cagey veteran talent at knowing the game like the back of his hand. Next year, the Hawks will lean upon that acumen to help the team on the less glamorous side.
