3 Takeaways from the Atlanta Hawks’ 116-111 Win Over IND
By Dallin Duffy
2. The Rebound Battle
The Atlanta Hawks have struggled rebounding the ball all season, something we hit on a bit above with Len.
The Hawks have been constantly out gunned on the boards, and are currently tied with the Wizards for the worst per game average of total rebounds.
This is of course partially due to the suspension and now injury to John Collins, who averaged 9.8 a game last year, and 9.7 this year.
When Atlanta does win the rebound battle however, they also win the game.
The Hawks have now out-rebounded their opponent in 7 of their 8 wins, including tonight’s slim 40-39 advantage.
Now you might be saying, of course their is a correlation of rebounds to winning, and yes, you’re right. It’s obvious.
But the Hawks have been decimated on the glass all season, and the fact that their now 7-1 when grabbing more rebounds is telling that it’s one of their biggest faults on the year.
We just wrote above on how Alex Len has been improving in that regard, and Damian Jones managed to grab 6 rebounds in his 9 minutes of work, but they still need more work.
Again, once Collins is back to full health, he’ll help significantly, but whoever gets the starting nod at center, whether that be Fernando or Jones, they’ll need to step up in order to secure the edge rebound wise.
